PRF microneedling gets described in a lot of confusing ways online. Strip away the marketing and it is two simple things done together: tiny controlled punctures in the skin, and a concentrate made from your own blood layered into them. That is the whole idea. Everything else is detail.
This guide walks through those details in plain language, the way we would explain them in the treatment room at 7493 N Oracle Rd #105, just south of Ina Road in northwest Tucson.
PRF stands for platelet rich fibrin
PRF starts with a small blood draw, the same kind you would have at a routine lab visit. That sample goes into a centrifuge, which spins it and separates it into layers. One of those layers is a soft fibrin clot dense with platelets and white blood cells. That is the PRF.
The part worth understanding is what is not in it. No additives. No anticoagulants. Nothing synthetic is mixed in. Because there are no anticoagulants, the fibrin is allowed to form a natural scaffold, and that scaffold releases growth factors slowly rather than all at once. Your body is the only ingredient.
If you have read about PRP and are wondering how the two compare, we wrote a separate breakdown at PRF vs PRP that covers the difference in more useful depth than a paragraph here could.
Why pair it with microneedling
Microneedling on its own creates a field of very small channels in the skin. The skin responds to those channels by repairing, and repair means new collagen. That process is why microneedling has been used for texture, fine lines and scarring for years.
Those same channels are also an opening. Applying PRF right after microneedling puts your own growth factors where the skin is already in repair mode, instead of leaving them sitting on the surface of intact skin where very little would get through. The needling makes the delivery possible and the PRF gives the repair more to work with.
What a session actually looks like
Here is the sequence, start to finish.
- Consultation first. We do not book a treatment before we have looked at your skin and talked through what you want changed. That is a fixed rule here, not a formality.
- The blood draw. Small volume, then straight into the centrifuge while you get settled.
- Topical numbing. This is applied and given time to work before anything else happens. Most people are surprised by how much it takes the edge off.
- The microneedling pass. Done in sections across the treatment area.
- The PRF. Applied to the freshly needled skin.
Afterward, expect mild redness for roughly 24 to 48 hours. It looks a bit like light sun exposure and it calms down on its own. That is the typical course, though skin varies and your provider will tell you what to watch for in your case.
How many sessions people usually need
Most clients do 3 to 4 sessions spaced a few weeks apart. There is a reason for the spacing: collagen does not build overnight, and the weeks between appointments are when the actual work happens. A single session can absolutely show a change, but the stacked result from a full series is what most people are picturing when they book.
Cristobal Mireles, who came to us after doing his own reading first, put it this way in his review: "I was able to see an improvement on my skin and acne after the first visit! Have gotten several compliments on how I'm 'glowing' now." Early change like that is common. It is also not the ceiling.
Who performs it
Your provider is Stephanie, a registered dental hygienist. She earned an AAS in Dental Hygiene from Pima Community College in 2009 and a BAS in Dental Hygiene from Northern Arizona University in 2011, and she began PRF facial esthetics training through the CARE program in 2024. Dental hygiene is a field built on working precisely in small areas with a steady hand, and that background shows up in how the treatment feels. One client, A Martinez, described it simply: "She's got such a light hand."
Does Tucson make a difference
It does. Our dry air pulls moisture out of skin year round, and dehydrated skin shows texture and fine lines more readily than skin that holds water well. Treatments aimed at texture and hydration tend to be especially relevant here, which is part of why PRF work is so popular in this corner of town. You can see the full range of concerns we address on our skin conditions page, and the treatment specifics live at PRF microneedling.
If you are curious whether this is a fit for your skin, the next step is a conversation, not a booking. Call us at (520) 744-7388 or request a consultation and we will talk it through.
