People usually arrive at this question after a friend mentions bio filler and it sounds like a version of the filler they already know. The two are not the same thing, and understanding why comes down to one question: where does the material come from?

Two different materials

Conventional dermal fillers are manufactured products. They are made in a lab, they come in a syringe, and they are placed under the skin to add volume. They are widely used and well understood.

PRF bio filler starts with your blood. A small draw goes into a centrifuge, which separates out a platelet rich fibrin layer. No additives and no anticoagulants are involved. That PRF is then heated, which turns it into a gel with enough body to be placed like a filler. The material in the syringe came out of your arm twenty minutes earlier.

That difference drives everything else about the comparison.

What bio filler does over time

Bio filler does two things on two different clocks. There is immediate volume, which you can see at the end of the appointment. Then, over the following weeks, the growth factors in the fibrin support collagen building in the treated area. So the short-term effect is volume, and the longer-term effect is the skin quality that develops underneath.

A bio filler appointment runs 45 to 60 minutes at our office, which includes the draw, the spin, the heating step and the placement.

How to think about the choice

Rather than declaring a winner, it helps to sort by what you actually care about.

  • You want nothing synthetic in your face. That is the clearest case for bio filler, and it is the reason a large share of our bio filler clients give. Your own blood is the entire ingredient list.
  • You want the skin itself to change, not just the contour. Bio filler contributes to collagen building over weeks. That is a different proposition from volume alone.
  • You have had a reaction to a product before, or you are wary of one. Worth raising at consultation. Your provider will talk through what applies to your situation.
  • You are treating a specific structural concern and have had good results with a conventional filler already. Do not let anyone talk you out of something that is working for you. Bring it up and get an honest read.

What we will not do is tell you that one option is universally better. That claim is a sales pitch, not clinical judgment, and the honest answer depends on your face, your history and your goals.

Where bio filler gets used

At our clinic, PRF is placed in areas including under-eye hollows, cheeks, nasolabial folds, fine lines and the jawline. If you are considering treatment for hollowing under the eyes specifically, the injection approach and the bio filler approach are both worth discussing, because they behave differently on timing. Straight PRF injections typically show change in the 2 to 4 week window with no immediate volume. Bio filler gives you something to see the same day.

Who is doing the work

Your provider is Stephanie, a registered dental hygienist. She earned her AAS in Dental Hygiene at Pima Community College in 2009 and her BAS in Dental Hygiene at Northern Arizona University in 2011, and began PRF facial esthetics training through the CARE program in 2024. The consistent theme in client feedback is care and explanation rather than speed. A Martinez put it plainly: "She's got such a light hand. She made sure I was comfortable and she took the time to explain every step."

For Botox, which is a different category of treatment entirely and works by relaxing muscles rather than adding volume, we use licensed injectors. If lines are your concern rather than volume loss, that conversation may belong on the Botox page instead.

A Tucson consideration

Volume loss and skin quality get conflated all the time, and our climate is part of why. Dry desert air leaves skin dehydrated and thin looking, which reads to most of us as the face having lost fullness. Sometimes it has. Sometimes the underlying structure is fine and the surface is simply parched. Treatments aimed at hydration and texture may address more of what is bothering you than a volume product would, and figuring out which is which is exactly what a consultation is for.
